The thesis check that caught Lucid

A robotaxi thesis named one way it could fail: a member running out of money. On 13 October 2026 that check tripped, with the filing attached. The same week, the check showed us a mistake in our own measurement, and we corrected it in public.

  1. 23 September 2026 — the thesis is written

“Autonomy enters its capital-intensive consolidation phase.” Four companies: Pony AI, WeRide, Lucid and Rivian. One of the ways the author said it would be wrong: a member stops being able to fund itself, set as a runway under 12 months.

  2. 13 October 2026 — the check trips

The evening check read each company's latest balance sheet and cash burn. Lucid showed about 2 months of runway. The criterion tripped, and the alert carried the number, its basis and its date. Nobody had to remember to look.

    CompanyRunway shown 13 Oct
    WeRide (WRD)40 months
    Pony AI (PONY)19 months
    Lucid (LCID)2 months
    Rivian (RIVN)12 months
  3. 13–14 October 2026 — the measurement is questioned and fixed

Rivian at 12 months and Pony at 19 looked too low. Every number carried its basis, so the cause was visible: for US filers the check counted cash and cash equivalents only, and left out short-term investments, where Rivian keeps billions. The fix also makes a foreign filer's newest quarterly report (6-K) always win over older annual data.

We fixed the measurement, added a test for exactly this trap, and recomputed:

CompanyCash and investments, 30 Jun 2026Runway
    Lucid$775.5m1.6 months
    Rivian$5,310m16.6 months
    Pony AI$1,390.5m92 months
    WeRide$795.6m40 months

The criterion stayed tripped, now because of Lucid alone. Because nothing changed state, no second alert went out. The correction was published next to the original alert, and the original was left untouched.

  4. What the author recorded

A decision with a reason joins the record: Lucid's new money came largely from its controlling shareholder, which is the “strategic financing” path the thesis itself expects, so the author kept the thesis and moved attention to the dilution check. (Shown as an example entry.)

Why this is the product

Catch the problem early. Show where every number came from. Correct mistakes in the open. Keep a record that proves all of it. A thesis tool that hides its errors can't be trusted on the day it matters; one that shows its working can.

How runway is measured: cash and short-term investments on the latest balance sheet, divided by the yearly free-cash burn (operating cash flow minus capital spending), in months. Here, first-half 2026 burn is annualised. Sources: Lucid and Rivian Q2 2026 results (SEC 8-K exhibit 99.1); Pony AI and WeRide Q2 2026 6-K reports; WeRide converted at 0.14738 USD per RMB.
